The Half-Life² Alpha version was a build of the game that was only available to Valve employees. The Alpha version differs a lot from the Beta and Retail releases. The alpha went threw many different development changes during the creation and some of the creations were still accessible in the Beta. The first development stages of the Alpha were running in the GoldSrc, or Goldsource engine (Half-Life 1 Engine). The engine was tweaked and modified bit by bit to see if Valve employees could produce a new engine running off the same concept as the Half-Life 1 engine. The first alpha stage of Half-Life² featured a map that had scripted sequences. The sequences were of citizens stealing TV’s in an old Proto (test map) version of City17. The citizen models that were created had gas masks and somewhat of a green hazmat suit attire. The build of the game was ran on a modified version of the GoldSrc engine that had some graphical tweaks applies such as bump mapping to make the textures look better.
